This university, fondly called NOUN, was established in July 1983, with a vision of providing education down to the doorsteps of every interested Nigerian. Although suspended in 1984, and thereafter resuscitate by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2002, it has proven to be an Open and Distance (ODL) learning institution providing flexible, functional, cost-effective education for flourishing in the 21st century and beyond as well as leveraging on Information and Computer Technologies to deliver an education designed for the global economy. With over 5 faculties, training and accredited certificate programs. The headquarters is situated in Jabi Abuja, with its’s Lagos head study centre located at 14/16 Ahamdu Bello Way Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria, and other study centres located across various cities in the country. The National Open University of Nigeria is located in South-West Region of Nigeria. The season’s unique to this region are the dry and rainy seasons. The dry season occurs from the month of October to April, while the rainy season occurs from the month of May until early August, with the Harmattan Season occurring between the month of December and February.

Admission requirements are fairly strict and depend on the courses available. The institution offers admission for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes.
100 Level Entry Students:
Applicants must possess a minimum of 5 credits in SSCE/GCE O’LEVEL/NECO/NABTEB or equivalents at not more than two (2) sittings obtained in subjects relevant to the proposed field of study. The 5 credits must compulsorily be in Mathematics, English and 3 other related subjects.
200 Level Students:
Applicants must have a National Diploma, which should come from a recognized institution in Nigeria.
Applicants are required to have a Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in a subject(s) related to the proposed field of study with a minimum of one unit and two (2) passes.
Applicants are required to have a first degree from a University recognized by the Senate of NOUN in a related field of study. A Postgraduate Diploma in a related field from a University recognized by the Management would also be an added advantage.
Candidates going for the Doctor of Philosophy degree programmes must possess a masters degree with a minimum score of not less than 60% or a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 on a 5-point scale, in relevant fields of study from a University recognized by the Senate of NOUN.
Applicants going for admission into NOUN for Ph.D. programmes are also to forward Transcripts of their academic records, three (3) referee’s report, with two (2) preferably acquainted with the candidate's academic works.
Applicants are also advised to prepare for an interactive session with the school of postgraduate studies.

This an Online Library of the learning institution. It avails students the opportunity to study online, hold group-study meetings online, and have access to additional materials, and resources relating to their coursework.
Information Gateway
This is more like an extension of the E-Library with specific journal search engines and software.
Radio Station
Mass communication students and students enthusiastic about media and journalism have the opportunity of interning at the Radio studio. The Radio broadcasts at the frequency 105.9 NOUN FM, it was established in 2010, and is located at 14/16 Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos.
