About Bayero University

Bayero University Kano (BUK) was initially established as Ahmadu Bello College in 1960 and was named after the Premier of Northern Nigeria, Ahmadu Bello. It was built to prepare senior secondary certificate holders for the General Certificate Exam (G.C.E) and 'A' level in Arabic, Hause, Islamic History, Islamic Studies and English Literature. Following the establishment of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1962, it was renamed Abdullahi Bayero College, after Abdullahi Bayero, Emir of Kano, and soon after became a faculty in the newly established Ahmadu Bello University.


In 1975, the University was raised to the status of a ‘University college’ with the right to award degrees on behalf of Ahmadu Bello University, and was thereafter raised to a full-fledged University by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1977, and became Bayero University. The University ceased to be a Faculty at Ahmadu Bello University in 1980. Courses and programmes at BUK are officially accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and lead to recognized degrees such as Bachelor, Masters and Doctorate degrees in diverse disciplines. With the vision “to lead in research and education in Africa”, it has diversified from the initial courses offered, to having over 16 faculties, providing students the opportunity to offer relevant and competitive courses.


BUK is committed to addressing African developmental challenges through cutting-edge research, knowledge transfer and training of high-quality graduates. Currently, the University ranks as the 16th best in the country by 4ic.org.

Bayero University Admission Requirements

Are you a prospective student looking at furthering your education at the institution, and don’t know what to do or have? Here’s an explanation of the admission requirements at BUK and what is required of you.


First, you have to be conversant with the courses offered in each faculty so that you can make a better choice of choosing your preferred course, you can go through the courses listed above and for further details visit the University’s website at buk.edu.ng.


Prospective students applying to Bayero University are broadly categorized into two, undergraduates and postgraduates. Undergraduate applicants are grouped further into three; UTME, Direct Entry, and Part-time Degree. Admission requirements in each level differ slightly. These requirements are as follows:


For UTME

-You are required to have at least 5 credit passes in your O’level result or its equivalent at no more than two sittings. The subjects passed should include English Language, Mathematics, and any other three, based on the subject combination for your desired course of study.

-You must register for JAMB, sit for the examination, and attain the prescribed JAMB cut-off mark for your course. This would make you eligible to;

-Sit for the Post-UTME examination organized by the institution. Bear in mind that you must attain the exact Post-UTME cut-off mark or preferably score higher so as to increase your chances of getting admitted.


For Direct Entry (DE)

As a prospective applicant coming in through DE, you are required to have your OND certificate (with merit), and also have the necessary O’level requirements for undergraduates which include having a minimum of 5 credit passes in English (compulsory for all courses), Mathematics (compulsory for science-based courses and social sciences), and three other relevant subjects.


For Part-time Degree

General requirements here include:

-Having an OND (with merit), NCE, IJMB (with a minimum of 8 points), GCE ‘A’ Level (3 credits) and HND (pass).

-You are required to have the necessary O’level requirements for undergraduates which include having a minimum of 5 credit passes in English (compulsory for all courses), Mathematics (compulsory for science-based courses and social sciences), and three other relevant subjects.

-You can only apply if you are twenty-five (25) years and above.

It's important to note that candidates with only ‘O’ level results would not be admitted


For Prospective Postgraduates

BUK offers postgraduate programmes at PGD, Masters, and Ph.D. levels. The courses offered in these levels are relatively similar to the ones offered at the Undergraduate level. The admission requirements for PG students at the institution isn’t so different from the general requirements requested in other universities. These requirements may include, obtaining 5 credit passes in SSCE/GCE or other equivalents, having a Bachelor degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division for PGD and Masters students or having a Masters degree with a weighted average score of 60% for Ph.D. programmes.

Asides all these, you may be requested to write an entrance examination depending on your proposed programme. Other requirements may also include, NYSC Discharge Certificate/ Exemption letter, and also your academic transcript.

Weather At The University

BUK experiences weather conditions accustomed to its location in Kano. Kano, one of the largest cities in Nigeria possess a tropical continental climate with a pronounced dry season lasting up to seven months (October-May). During the dry season, a cool period is usually experienced between November and February, and this emanates from the influence of the North-easterly winds. The rainy season also comes and lasts from May to September, sometimes extending to October. It's also advisable to note that the University experiences its own fair share of harsh weather conditions.

Bayero University school fees for new/returning students for 2017/2018 academic session was recently released by the institution. The school fees were set between the range of the following:


New students :N 29,0000 - N 40,000.

Returning students: N26,000 - N37,000

International students: N150,000
