American University of Nigeria was established in 2003, Built by Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar in 2003.

About American University of Nigeria

AUN as the University is fondly called is a private institution, established with an American style of Education, providing programmes accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to students at Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Professional levels. The University was founded in 2003, by former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar and other stakeholders. Conceived as Africa’s first development University,  it is the only University with an American style of Education in Sub-Saharan Africa and provides its students with the tools to achieve personal growth and material success with a high focus on Information Technology (IT). AUN was originally called ABTI and is currently a member of the Association of American International Colleges and Universities, and the Global Liberal Arts Alliance.

AUN Facilities


AUN is a residential campus situated on 2,400 hectares of land. The University provides a conducive learning environment, with small classrooms to enhance class interaction and deep Understanding. It is also home to a standard library also called an e-library which was given an award for the most innovative international library in 2013. Other facilities at the institution include convenient hostel accommodation for students, academic blocks and offices, science and IT laboratories, cafeteria’s, relaxation centres, a University club, an ICT centre, and a modern hotel.The University recently opened an Agricultural Entrepreneurship School on a local farmstead near the campus.

Admission Requirements for Undergraduates Into AUN

Admission into the University is relatively selective, and students have to go out of their way to show that they want the admission. The admission officers carefully scrutinize the applications as applicants are accessed by their JAMB, WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, IGCSE, e.t.c scores, and SS1, SS2, and SS3 transcripts. Only students with the highest scores and qualifications are eventually selected.


In addition to the above, the admission requirement at the University also includes:

  • Applicants must possess a minimum of five (5) credit passes in SSCE/GCE O’LEVEL/NECO/NABTEB or equivalents at no more than two (2) sittings obtained in subjects relevant to the proposed field of study. The 5 credits must compulsorily be in Mathematics, English and 3 other related subjects. For students, going in for law, it is compulsory that you have a credit pass in Literature.

  • In addition, applicants must register, sit for and attain the prescribed cut-off mark (usually 180) in UTME.


Admission Requirements For Postgraduates Into AUN

The University has a continuous postgraduate system, comprising of spring (January), summer (May), and Fall (August) semesters. A prospective applicant must be a graduate of a recognized University with an average grade point of 3.0 on a 5.0 CGPA scale. Other requirements may include:

  • Graduate certificate with verifiable grades and required grade point average.

  • Academic transcript from University attended.

  • Two (2) letters of recommendation

  • A current Curriculum Vitae

  • A personal statement of purpose, and

  • NYSC discharge certificate.


In addition to meeting all the above, each applicant is expected to have a minimum of one-year work experience, preferably at the mid-level of senior management level.
