About Imo State University
The University fondly called ‘IMSU’ and is a state-owned and governed higher institution of learning, established in 1981 following the approval of the Federal Government, which was sought for, and obtained by the then Governor of the State, Chief Sam Mbakwe, with the aim of establishing a Liberal Studies institution in the state. IMSU initially started off with a collegiate system but was subsequently replaced with a Faculty structure in 2001. Currently having eleven (11) faculties, with a College of Medicine and Health Sciences, the University offers quite a number of postgraduate and undergraduate courses officially accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC). With its laudable accreditation and structural development, IMSU is poised to take its pride of place as one of the best state-owned University in the Nation.

Imo State University Admission Requirements
Although there are specific admission requirements based on faculties or prefered course. There are still some general requirements set by the institution for prospective applicants in various levels. We’ve compiled useful details about the general admission requirements. Find them below:
IMSU Admission Requirements For Undergraduates
Pre-degree (JUPEB):
Prospective are required to have their O'level results (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB).
You are also required to obtain the application form and sit for the entrance examination organized by the University.
100 Level Entry Students:
Applicants must possess a minimum of five (5) credit passes in SSCE/GCE O’LEVEL/NECO/NABTEB or equivalents at no more than two (2) sittings obtained in subjects relevant to the proposed field of study. The 5 credits must compulsorily be in Mathematics, English and 3 other related subjects.
In addition, applicants must register, sit for and attain the prescribed cut-off mark (usually 180) in UTME, and also prepare for a screening process organized by the school.
200 Level (Direct-entry) Students:
Applicants must have a National Diploma, which should come from a recognized institution in Nigeria.
Applicants are required to have a Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in a subject(s) related to the proposed field of study with a minimum of one unit and two (2) advanced level passes.
Applicants must also register with JAMB for Direct-entry registration.
IMSU Admission Requirements For Postgraduates (PG)
The University has available postgraduate programmes in some of the faculties listed above. The types of PG programmes available include, Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters degree and Doctor of Philosophy. Although admission requirements differ across these levels, here a few general requirements for prospective applicants.
Bachelor’s degree/ HND certificate from the University, or one recognized by the University’s Senate.
Masters degree certificate for candidates proposing to pursue M.Phil or PhD.
NYSC Discharge/Exemption certificate.
Marriage certificate or evidence of a change of name (if applicable).
Any other certificate or document(s) relevant to the mode of application.
Academic transcript(s) and reference letters from previous University lecturers.
It’s also important to note that the College or department, may also require additional conditions such as oral interview, or entrance examination.

A Radio Station: Called IMSU Star FM, with radio frequency 90.9, is situated on campus and is open to students enthusiastic about media and journalism.

Imo State University School Fees
As it is a growing trend with state universities in the country, school fees for indigenes are way lower than that of non-indigenes. Many have criticized this action, but it can be argued that its a means of empowering and energizing youths to gain university qualification. The University has released its school fees schedule for the 2017/2018 academic session for non-indigenes, with indigenes allowed to pay half of the stipulated amount. Find the schedule below:
Faculty of Medicine: N190,000
Faculties of Law and Engineering: N180,000
Faculties of Social Science, Business Administration, Education, Humanities, and Other faculties: N150,000.
It’s important to note the payment of an ancillary fee of N19,500 is also required for both indigenes and non-indigenes, as defaulters won’t be allowed to sit for examinations.
