History of Badagry

This was built in 15th centuryas a slave port which was used for transporting slaves to the Western world.. It is notable as a historical site in Nigerian history with relics from the colonial era.

  • Christianity was first preached in Nigeria at Badagry in 1842 by Rev Thomas Birch Freeman.

  • The first educational system of Nigeria as a British colony started in Badagry where the first primary school was established by the Wesleyan mission (Methodist Church) in 1843 and was named Nursery of Infant church which later became St. Thomas’ Anglic
