National Stadium, Lagos

ABOUT
National Stadium, Lagos is one of Nigeria's historical monuments and it tells the story of Nigeria's past greatness in the sports sector. It was built in 1961 and later expanded and renovated in 1972 to provide a standard arena to host the 1973 All African Cup. Since then several major in-country and cross-continent tournaments have been held at the stadium and thousands of football supporters convey at the airport to watch these games.
In March 1980, the stadium hosted Group A teams (Ivory Coast, Egypt, and Tanzania) for the 1980 African Cup of Nations. It was one of the games that drew global attention to the standard facilities of the stadium and its beautiful architecture in the late 80s. Because of the worldwide attention it drew, the stadium was also used as the host stadium for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 1999. In the early 2000s, the stadium began to deteriorate and features such as the football pitch, seats and gymnastics became an eyesore. Because of this deterioration, the stadium lost its past charms and became an ignored edifice y the football federation. The last influential tournament held at the stadium was the Four-Nation LG Cup held in 2004. In 2019, the government announced its plans to revive the stadium and bring it to an even better state than it was before and till date, 2020, the National Stadium is still in its renovation phase.
