Named after Alvan Ikoku, a great educationist, founder of the first indigenous secondary school In Eastern Nigeria and one time President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, this college was originally opened as the Advanced Teachers Training College, Owerri. It was closed down during the civil war and reopened at the present site built with the assistance of the British Government. In 2007, it was taken over by the Federal Government and with it, the college witnessed improved financial aid and infrastructural growth to renovate dilapidated structures, build large classrooms, laboratories and hostels and expand the staff strength.
