The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria is called James F. Entwistle. The Deputy Chief of Mission is called Maria E. Brewer and the Consul General in the Lagos Consulate Office is called Jeffrey J. Hawkins.
Important Embassy Sections
The American Embassy is made up of different sections across both the embassy in Abuja and the Consulate Office in Lagos.
The consular section: this section deals with inquiries and questions relating to visas to the United States. For general visa questions, emails may be sent directly to [email protected] with the subject of the inquiry as the subject of the mail e.g. ‘Student visa’ etc. More specific inquiries relating to immigrant visas being processed should be sent to the consulate in Lagos through [email protected]. When visiting the consular offices, weapons, sharp meta or glass, razors, liquids, powders, umbrellas, electronic equipment (including cellphones, cameras etc) are not allowed.

The economic section: found in both the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos, it is responsible for covering areas such as the broad range of Nigeria’s economy, defining analyses on social and economic developments, acting as a liaison among several economic stakeholders etc. Thus, this section works with the Nigerian government and other stakeholders in the private sector to provide information on the Nigerian economy to the Chief of Mission and the U.S. Department of State to assist in the creation of foreign policies.
The foreign agriculture service: located in the Lagos consulate, this office is the overseas arm of the United States Department of Agriculture and it serves in regional capacity for Nigeria, Liberia, Ghana, Benin and Cameroun. It offers different services to the agribusinesses in Nigeria and the United States with Nigerian and West African regional interests.
The human resources office: this office also known as HRO functions to implement HR policies for the United Embassy and Consulate General in Nigeria for both American employees and the Locally Employed Staff (LES).
The office of Defense Cooperation: like the name suggests, this is an office created by the US government to service national interests within the Nigerian defense environment. It functions to support sales of US military equipment to Nigerian defense, including the training of Nigerian defense officers. It is intended to create a familiarization with the Nigerian defense and create cooperation with the Nigerian defense staff.

The office of international narcotics and law enforcement: this section offers services to Nigerian law enforcement agencies in relation to training for the NDLEA (National Drug Law Enforcement Agency) of Nigeria, the EFCC, ICPC and the Nigeria Police Force. It also provides assistance for the NAPTIP, Immigration and Customs. This particular office also funds training programs conducted by the FBI and DEA.
Office of the Legal Attache: this office functions to establish cooperation between the FBI and the law enforcement and intelligence services of Nigeria. This cooperation is to ensure that the country meets its international responsibilities in the prevention of organized crime, international terrorism, foreign counterintelligence and general criminal matters. While the office is located in the Consulate General Lagos, it also serves regional interests in Benin, Cameroun, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, Togo and Sao Tome and Principe.
PEPFAR: Known as the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief it was incepted in 2004 and since then has disbursed over 544 billion Naira to support the fight and response to HIV?AIDS in Nigeria with over 600,000 men, women and children currently undergoing HIV treatment and about 480,000 people reached via HIV sensitization messages along with 8.7 million people who have received free counseling and testing for HIV, 55,000 pregnant women who have received anti-retroviral drugs to prevent the transfer of the disease from mother to child.
The Political Office: this office functions to provide information on the politics of Nigeria to the United States Department of State for the formation of foreign policy.
Public affairs section: this section functions to manage the Nigerian perception to the United States, engaging them about American ways of life, informing them on US policies for Nigeria, inviting notable American speakers to Nigeria to discuss issues of mutual concern etc.
The USAID office: this section deals with USAID relief programs for Nigeria, in areas of healthcare, agriculture, food security, water, democracy and other important areas of the economy.
The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) office: located in the US Embassy, Abuja, this section works with the Federal Government of Nigeria, local implementing partners and other US interests to achieve public health excellence for healthy Nigerians.
