History of Iga Idungaran

This was built in October 1, 1960. It is notable as it is an administration center

  • All the Obas of Lagos before Oba Akintoye are buried in Benin City. Oba Akintoye was the first Oba of Lagos to be buried within the modern palace

  • The name IGA, derived from the Oyo/Ife Yoruba language GAA meaning Royal Home or Palace, IDUN means land, place or sound of while IGANRAN is the Yoruba word for pepper. Iga Idunganran therefore translates to mean the palace built on a pepper farm as Aromi

Built by Abubakar Tafawa Balewa in October 1, 1960.

The Iga Idungaran palace home to the Oba of Lagos with its superior architectural display and rich history is a must visit for visitors and locals.
