Source of the River Ethiope

Umuaja
Source of the River Ethiope was established in , Built by in .
Believed to be the deepest inland waterway in Africa, the River Ethiope, unlike sources of other rivers, originates from the foot of a giant silk-cotton tree.

Reason For Loving Place

The River Ethiope is a river of outstanding beauty. It is home to a great biodiversity of plants and animals. The river provides ecosystem services such as flood control, climate change regulation, recreation, spiritual homage, water supply, food, research and education, medicine, building materials etc to many communities through which it passes. Shrouded in mystery, it has continually attracted tourists from other parts of Nigeria, even foreigners

Nice Things About Place

The main lure of River Ethiope is the uniqueness of its source and the secrecy the river is said to possess. Considered as a sacred location, the river sprouts out from four different locations with two of these locations directly underneath the tree, while the other two from around the tree. Owing to the spiritual affiliation attached, some areas of the groove surrounding the river source are restricted to visitors with a footpath leading to the grove, which is covered by thick bushes and finally opens into the Onoku shrine. Less than two meters away stands the giant silk-cotton tree wrapped with yards of white and red clothes. One of the mysteries around the river is that during the dry season the water level around the Source has a higher volume of water and when the raining season comes the volume reduces.
