History of Cave of Ashes Isarun
The cave played a significant role in the archaeological history of West Africa. In 1968, Professor Thurstan Shaw of the then University of Ile-Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), conducted an intensive and extensive research and exploration on the
Pottery works excavated from the site dated as far back as 1000B.C and was published in Professor Shaw's book, HISTORY OF WEST AFRICAN ARCHEOLOGY, Vol 1.
Built by Chief Obele in 1922.
Not many people know that a cave in Ondo played a huge role in the documentation of the archaeological history of West Africa with the discovery of bones of pre historic man dated as far back as 9200B.C. The Cave of Ashes is a must see for tourists, historians and archaeologists.
