Mbormi Battle Ground

Reason For Loving Place
This is a very significant place, both from a religious and history perspective. It was the final spot of the defeat and annihilation of the famed Sokoto caliphate. The then Sultan of Sokoto, Sultan Attahiru I cut off diplomatic ties with the British colonists in defiance of colonialism which led to a war. Fleeing Sokoto for the Holy City Madina, he and his followers were ambushed and attacked again by the British colonists here in this little village Mbormi. After a heated battle, the Sultan was killed and as he left his throne without a successor, the Sokoto caliphate was cut short in 1903.

Reason To Recommend Place
Presently, the landscape is an abandoned settlement site with evidence of archaeological remains and the three marked graves of the leaders of Sokoto caliphate, Amirul Muminin Sultan Attahiru I, the Chief Imam of the caliphate and that of the commander of the British forces that warred against them, Major Marsh. Sometimes, local drama groups reenact the battle scene between both armies to the education and entertainment of visiting guests and tourists.
