It was formerly known as Queen Elizabeth Specialist Hospital before it was taken over by the federal government and made into a medical centre. It is a 327-bed tertiary hospital with about 1,600 staff, 358 of which are doctors. Of the total doctors, 76 are consultants, specialist in over 15 disciplines. FMC Umuahia has the fastest growing Residency Training Programme in Nigeria with recorded passes in surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, radiology, community medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, anesthesiology and internal medicine.
