Formerly known as the South East Fistula Centre, Abakaliki, it was taken over by the Federal Government 2011 as a National Reference Centre for Management of Obstetric Fistula with mandate for provision of free Treatment, Training of medical and paramedical Personnel, Rehabilitation, Research and Prevention. Thus far, it has provided free treatment for over 1600 patients from 20 States of the Federation, and close to a hundred medical and paramedical personnel from several teaching hospitals and other federal, state and private health institutions across the country have received training for fistula surgery.
