The Legal Aid Council are a group of lawyers charged with the responsibility of providing free legal representation to individuals charged on the basis of a crime and are unable to afford a good representation for themselves. The Legal Aid Council (LAC) of Nigeria was established under the Legal Aid Act No. 56 of 1976 which was amended by Cap 205, 1990 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, and repealed in 2011 by the Legal Aid Act 2011. The Legal Aid Council began its operations as an Association of Public Offenders through efforts of noble men some of whom include; Chief Chimezie Ikeazor, Debo Akande and Solomon Lar. The Association currently works in all 36 states of the country, 6 offices and 10 centres is local government areas. Its headquarters is presently in Abuja.Safety
