About The National Veterinary Research Institute

The National Veterinary Research Institute conducts research into all aspects of animal diseases, treatments and control. It produces animal vaccines to meet national demand as well as surveillance and diagnosis of animal diseases. The Institute also trains personnel in Veterinary Laboratory Technology and Animal Health and Production Technology.


History of The National Veterinary Research Institute

The First Veterinary Department in West Africa was established in Zaria in 1913, to combat and prevent amongst other things, panzootic of Rinderpest which had occured to devastating effect between 1885 and 1890. It was moved to its present location Vom in 1924 as a Veterinary Laboratory and became the Pioneer Institute in West Africa in the production of anti Rinderpest Serum and Animal Vaccines. The Federal Government by virtue of the Agricultural Research Institute Decree 35 of 1975, its former name Federal Department of Veterinary Research was changed to National Veterinary Research Institute.

Weather at The National Veterinary Research Institute

The National Veterinary Research Institute is located in the North-Central region of Nigeria. Thus, it experiences three weather conditions yearly. This includes a warm, humid rainy season and a blistering dry season.  In between the two, there is a brief interlude of harmattan occasioned by the northeast trade wind, with the main feature of dust haze and dryness which is between December and February. Temperatures can drop to as low as 16 degrees during the harmattan period.
