Dodan Barracks.
An historic site, this military barracks was once the residence of the heads of state of various Military Governments in Nigeria, and also the Supreme Military Headquarters from 1966 until the move to Abuja in 1991.
This is a very safe location.
Named after the site of a battle fought during the Second World War by the 82nd West African Division in Burma, it features housing accommodations for the various military personnel and their families. It also features large open spaces for military drills, a healthcare centre, religion centres and educational centres for the residents in the barracks. Inside the barracks is the old State House where President Jimmy Carter met with the then Head of State, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo in 1978.
A one-time seat of power in Nigeria after a counter-coup that saw Gen Yakubu Gowon made Head of State, Dodan Barracks is presently a shell of its old self. Turned over to the Nigerian Police Force in 2004, it has gradually witnessed deterioration with some of its buildings now abandoned and the grounds unkempt and dirty.
