About Kalale Hippopotamus Pond

Kalale Hippopotamus Pond is located in the Dangulbi area of Maru Local Government, Zamfara. It is about 120km from Gusau. The Kalale Hippopotamus pond is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Zamfara state. The Kalale pond is a large one and it’s the habitat of several hippopotamuses.
Kalale Hippopotamus Pond can be visited by tourists, nature/wild life lovers and researchers.
Hippopotamuses spend most of the day in water and come out at night to feed. Hippos secrete an oily red substance, which gave rise to the myth that they sweat blood. The liquid is actually a skin moistener and sun block that may also provide protection against germs. This natural behavior has proved to be most unfortunate for the Kalale locals, though, as the Hippos steal food and destroy farms. Kalale hippopotamus pond is located in the North-West  region of the country. This region experience two seasons which are the rainy and dry season. The rainy season come heavily from the month of May, June, July. While the dry season usually comes between the month of October up until April.
