CMS Grammar School

Tijani Ashogbon Street, Ilaje, Bariga
CMS Grammar School was established in 1859, Built by Church Missionary Society in 1859.
An all-boys secondary school, this is the oldest secondary school in Nigeria and a cradle of Western education in Nigeria.

Reason For Loving Place

Founded out of the need to promote education in order to make Christian evangelism a success in the largely unlearned Nigeria, the school has become one of the best schools in West Africa and a model school for public and private schools around the country. Recording success in all areas including education, competitions, social events, and even on the international scene, the prestigious school has continually remained one of the brightest secondary schools and has members of its Old Boys Association in all walks of life, all over the world.

Nice Things About Place

Notable among its alumni are Adeyemo Alakija, Emeka Ojukwu, Akintola Williams, Bishop Ayodele Awojobi, Bode Thomas, Ernest Shonekan, Dare Art Alade, Herbert Macaulay, Frederick Rotimi Williams, and musician 9ice.

Reason To Recommend Place

Owned by the Anglican Missionary Church, for 25 years it was taken over by the Government in a wave of nationalizing private schools and within this period, the school recorded a devastating deterioration with its high academic standards falling and its facilities unable to cater to the increased student populace. However, the school was returned back to its founders and they set to work to put things to right and return the school to its original and exalted status.
