This airport is named in honor of a former governor and politician-philanthropist, the late Chief Sam Mbakwe of Imo State.

This is the first state government-built airport but has presently been taken over by the Federal Government. It serves to link Owerri with the world and in 2009, it serviced about 276,926 people.
In 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari approved the upgrade of the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport to an international airport and upgrading commenced immediately.
