Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport was built in 1992 by Imo State Government.
This airport is named in honor of a former governor and politician-philanthropist, the late Chief Sam Mbakwe of Imo State.

In 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari approved the upgrade of the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport to an international airport and upgrading commenced immediately.
