China Visa Information for Nigerians: How to Apply and Requirements

China is the largest of all Asian countries and is also the world?s most populated country. It covers one-fourteenth (1/14) of the Earth?s land area and is almost as large as the whole of Europe. As of 2019, China?s  estimated population is at 1,433,783,686 people. The major language spoken in China is Mandarin Chinese. However, there are other major foreign languages spoken in China and they are English and Portuguese, these languages are spoken mostly in the urban centers of China.
China is known for the widespread of its inventions around the world and its technological advancement. These and many more are the things that draw foreigners to China. Beijing (Peking) is the country?s capital, Hong Kong is the leading commercial center of the country and Shanghai is the main industrial city of the country. 

Nigerians aspiring to visit the country for any purpose at all would be required to get a visa. Accompanying this should be an original Nigerian passport. Other foreign nationals who reside in  Nigeria can also go into China provided they have their valid passport and the appropriate visa type for their travel. There are other important things that would be required to get into the country at the embassy.

General Requirements for a China Visa

Tourist Visa Information

This visa is given to applicants who want to visit China for reasons such as visiting, vacationing or sightseeing. It is referred to as the L visa for short and this visa is valid for 90 days or 180 days from the date of issuance for either single-entry or double-entry after which the visa is considered invalid. 

The single-entry and double-entry visas allow a stay of up to 30 days depending on the embassy?s choice while the multiple-entry tourist visa allows you to enter China for as many times as possible within one year and the duration of stay for every entry is 60 days. 

Travelers who have a host in China are expected to provide the relevant information (e.g. House address, name of the host, etc.) of their host to the embassy.

Business Visa Information

The China business visa is issued to applicants who have business deals, trade activities, conferences or scheduled meetings in China.  This visa is labeled as the M visa for short. 

Travelers on this visa are expected to submit an invitation letter from the host company or organization. The letter is only valid for 3 months from the date of issuance.

Student Visa Information

This visa is given to applicants who want to study in China for a given period of time.  There are two types of this visa- the F visa (study within 180 days) and the X visa (study for over a year). The X visa is valid for 3 months within which traveler must have requested for study and residence permits in the country. The student must go through the necessary procedure for obtaining a permit.

Applicants of this visa would be asked to submit their admission letter from an institution in China and records of their educational history.

Application Process

There are three stages every applicant would go through when applying for a China visa. These stages are experienced after the applicant must have filled out the application form.  The first stage is the appointment stage where the applicant is given a time for an interview. The second stage is the interview stage where the applicant is required to come to the embassy in person for questioning. At this stage, those who have submitted fake documents would not be allowed to carry on with the application.

The third state is the collection stage which only comes up after the applicant has passed the interview and has been approved for visa collection. The collection stage usually comes up 1 or 2 weeks after the interview. The consular or embassy would request for a fee after this stage has been completed.

Processing Time

The time it takes to process a China visa in the Chinese embassy or consulate in Nigeria is 10 working days. Applicants are advised to go through the process thoroughly and give enough time for the visa to be processed.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can an extension be requested for on the tourist or business visa?

Yes, travelers can request for an extension on their visas. This would be done at the local Exit and Entry Administration of China and the extension should be requested for seven days before the expiry of the L visa.  Note that the approval of this extension is dependent on the body in charge of apportioning the extension.

2. Are Nigerians eligible for the 10-year China Visa?

Unfortunately, Nigerians are not eligible for this visa. Holders of passports for the following countries are the ones eligible for this visa; The United States, The United Kingdom, Argentina, Canada, and Israel.

3. Is transit free for Nigerian travelers going from China to other countries?

Yes, transit through China is free for Nigerian travelers. China allows a period of 144 hours visa-free for Nigerian travelers However, it is necessary to know what port you are to transit through in China.
