About Portugal

Portugal is a southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain. Its capital is Lisbon, and Portuguese is spoken as its official language. It is the westernmost country of mainland Europe. To the west and south it is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and to the east and north by Spain. Its location on the Atlantic Ocean has influenced many aspects of its culture: salt cod and grilled sardines are national dishes, the Algarve's beaches are a major destination and much of the nation’s architecture dates to the 1500s–1800s, when Portugal had a powerful maritime empire. Portugal established the first global empire, becoming one of the world's major economic, political and military powers. Euro is the official trade currency.
