The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium is arguably the most beautiful stadium in Nigeria situated in Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Boulevard, Uyo. Notably referred to as ‘The Nest of Champions’, the ultra-modern sports complex boasts of a 30,000-capacity stadium, bulletproof VIP and VVIP areas, natural grass, high-tech floodlights, provision for an indoor sports hall, training pitch, village games, helipad, collapsible seats and a swimming pool.
Among all these are dressing rooms, media facilities, a box office, video facilities, 7500 seater Grandstand, a standard eight-lane 400m track, warm-up facility with a six-lane 400m track, a standby power supply system and an ambulance bay.
The stadium structure was modelled after the Allianz Arena in Germany designed to meet International Safety Standards. There are 30 emergency exit points estimated to facilitate exit in 6 minutes at full capacity, closed-circuit security cameras, crowd control steel fencing, stand by firefighting equipment and metal detectors.
Sitting on 36 hectares of land, the stadium can be regarded as the centre of sporting activities as it has become the venue for majority of the national games. It’s also a good venue for social, cultural and religious events. It’s a cool spot for recreational activities be it a jog on the track, football with friends or a deep swim in the pool.
Godswill Akpabio International Stadium has become the home to the super eagles of Nigeria as most international matches are being played there as it is regarded as one of the best stadiums in Africa. It is the pride of Uyo.
