How to Get a German Study Visa- Guides and Application process.

Germany is a Western European country with a landscape of forests, rivers, mountain ranges and North Sea beaches. With about 400 learning Institution in Germany, it is a little to no wonder why foreigners would want to study in one of the learning institutions and as a result, studying in Germany has become a very easy process for foreigners.

The education system in Germany functions on the set rules and regulations of the Basic Law (also called Grundgesetz). In Germany, the main authority for making education, science and arts policy guidelines and for adopting related laws and administrative regulations is The Federal Ministries of Education, Cultural Affair and Science. The Federal Ministries of Education joins forces with the Federation and L?nders (German states) authorities in order to supervise the entire activities of the educational institutions, organizations and foundations in the country. Germany is a Schengen country, so foreigners can apply for a Schengen study visa.

General Requirements for The German Study Visa.

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months from the intended arrival date and must have 2 blank pages for visa stamp.
  • Duly completed and signed visa application form.
  • If the applicant is a minor, the parents/legal guardians have to sign the form.
  • Two passport-size photographs (36 mm x 45 mm) taken in grey background.
  • Travel document.
  • Proof of financial support.
  • Proof of accommodation.
  • Copy of return flight ticket.
  • Proof of admission into the learning Institution in Germany i.e an admission letter.
  • Original certificates of your educational background in your home country.
  • Proof of proficiency in the German language (for German-only language programs) and the English Language (for English and mixed-language study programs).
  • For married students, a copy of your marriage certificate is to be submitted. 
  • Medical travel insurance with coverage of at least 30,000 Euros.
  • Documentation showing applicant?s ties to home country, e.g. verification from applicant?s employer.
  • Documentation confirming the purpose of travel.
  • Copy of travel itinerary.

Guides to the German Study Visa Application Process.

  • Complete and sign the application form on time- It is important to complete and sign the application form and collect all the required documents before applying.
  • Make an appointment early- It is necessary that you book an appointment before you can go to the Application center to submit your documents for a German study visa. All visa applications are accepted only if you have made prior appointment.
  • Go to Application Center early- Make sure you arrive at the Application Center ten minutes before the appointment time. Your appointment letter will be verified and you will be issued a token. The embassy may not be able to process your visa request if you are late for more than 10 minutes.
  • Visa application submission- The submission of your visa application will take about 10 minutes to complete. Make sure that:-
  • -All your documents are arranged in the order stated on the checklist.
    - Your application form is complete and signed.
  • Biometric data collection- Once the application process has been completed, your biometrics will be collected using a quick process that captures a 10-digit fingerprint scan with a digital finger scanner. This will usually take 7-8 minutes per applicant.
  • Stay updated about your visa status- Once your application has been submitted, you can track its progress through an online tracking service. The status will be updated as and when your passport is ready for collection/delivery.

The fee for Germany student visa application is 75 euros. Applicants are required to pay the visa fees by a bank transfer. Cheques or credit cards are not accepted.

It takes up to 25 days for a German student visa application to be processed.
