Corona virus latest: Italy death toll rises

Around the globe, the corona virus battle intensifies as some countries are making progress while some are experiencing setbacks. The virus which originated in Wuhan, China in December 2019 has moved across borders and continents spreading rapidly at an alarming rate.

Countries around the world are implementing necessary measures to limit the spread of the virus, schools and universities are being shut down, businesses are being closed except those producing essential goods and services and restrictions on movement are being enforced.

Some countries such as Italy, Spain, France and Britain have imposed a national lockdown while countries such as Nigeria, Canada, Germany, Ivory Coast, and many others restricted movements in affected states. These measures are beginning to show positive effects as some countries have testified that the surge in the number of new cases continues to decline.

Situation updates around the world

The corona virus pandemic continues to spread across the globe. Presently, W.H.O has established that at least 177 countries have confirmed cases of corona virus. Current statistics puts the number of confirmed cases in the world is 421, 413 with the death toll being 18,810. The number of recovered cases is 108,388 leaving the number of active cases at 294,215.

The epicentre of the pandemic is Europe with the worst hit being Italy recording over 6,500 deaths and Spain coming in second with over 2,500 deaths. Heavy restrictions are being placed globally to limit the spread as health facilities are being overwhelmed amidst fears of an imminent collapse if the numbers keep increasing.

What is the cure for corona virus?

There is no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment known to prevent or cure corona virus at the moment, although there is ongoing research on vaccines and drugs for treatment of the virus. Various pharmaceuticals and biotech companies have come up with vaccines and drugs in various stages of development with claims that they showed positive infects in treatment but they are yet to undergo clinical trials hence not fit for human use.

At the moment, the best way to eliminate corona virus is to practice social distancing, good respiratory hygiene, wash hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol, disinfect and clean frequently touched objects and surfaces. This way, you get to limit the spread of the pandemic and keep yourself safe.
