This funny travel story was submitted as part of the Funny Travel Stories competition on Hotels.ng. Read below and enjoy! I had traveled to Vietnam for work. I converted my US dollars to Vietnamese Dongs. The conversion rate at time was roughly 1 USD = 18,000 Dongs. I took a cab from an airport to the hotel. After I reached the hotel, Me: “How much?” Cab Guy: “five hundred!” Me: (I pulled out cash from my wallet only to find that lowest denomination was 2500 Dong, wondering how I pay him 500 Dongs now, I handed him a coin of 2500 Dongs) “Here you go” Cab Guy: (Turned completely pale) “No no no! More zero. More zero.” Me: (Thinking, maybe they have more zeros in a five hundred, I pulled out 5000 Dongs at the same time thinking to ask him if he means leading or trailing zeros :p) “Is that okay?” Cab Guy: “No no no!! more zeros more zeros!” Me: (Wondering how many zeros they put on a five hundred, pulled out 50,000 Dongs) “Aaa… How about this?” Cab Guy: (Turns even more pale) “One more zero! One more zero!” Me: (By this time I am thinking I am getting ripped off, I showed him all the notes I have and ask him to pick what he wants) “You tell me..” Cab Guy: (Pulls out 500,000 Dongs) “Aah. Thank you sir!” Me: (Almost sure I am getting ripped off) “Great. Thanks!” Later I calculated that 500,000 dongs was worth around Rs. 1,250. So I felt relieved. Also after going around for a while I figured out that because of the currency valuation, people there drop last 3 zeros to make it easier. Basically 2.5 is 2,500 Dongs. The cab guy demanded 500 which was 500,000 Dongs. Note: I do not mean to offend anyone by mimicking their language or accent. I expressed things from my perspective where I did not know any of the native languages. –Danjackwhite2k Was this story funny?
